Kathua, March 30,2026- In a significant development for urban infrastructure, a ₹49.5 crore sewerage and drainage project for Kathua and Lakhanpur has been approved by the National Green Tribunal, bringing much-needed relief to residents grappling with waterlogging and sanitation issues.

The project aims to address long-standing concerns related to improper drainage, sewage overflow, and urban flooding, especially during the monsoon season. With the approval now in place, authorities are expected to initiate groundwork and implementation in a phased manner.

MLA Bharat Bhushan lauded the decision, crediting sustained efforts and consistent follow-ups for the project’s clearance. He expressed gratitude to the government for prioritizing the needs of the region and sanctioning funds for a project that has been pending for years.

“This project will significantly improve sanitation, ensure proper waste disposal, and mitigate waterlogging in Kathua and Lakhanpur. It is a major step towards enhancing the quality of life for residents,” he said.

Officials noted that the project will include the construction of modern sewerage networks, drainage channels, and treatment facilities to ensure environmentally sustainable waste management. The initiative is also expected to reduce health risks associated with stagnant water and poor sanitation conditions.

Residents have welcomed the move, expressing hope that the implementation will be timely and effective. The project is poised to boost urban development, improve public health, and strengthen civic infrastructure in the Kathua district.

The approval marks a crucial milestone in addressing infrastructure gaps and reflects the administration’s commitment to sustainable and inclusive development in Jammu and Kashmir.
