Massive drug seizure in J&K: Centre raises alarm

Srinagar,April 2, 2026-The Central Government has revealed that more than 68,000 kilograms of narcotics have been seized across Jammu & Kashmir over the past five years, highlighting the scale of drug trafficking and its deep-rooted networks in the Union Territory.

According to official data shared by the Centre, the massive seizures point toward well-entrenched trafficking operations, often linked with cross-border smuggling routes. The figures underline growing concerns over the nexus between narcotics trade and elements operating from across the border.

Security and enforcement agencies, including police and anti-narcotics units, have intensified operations across vulnerable districts, leading to consistent crackdowns on drug peddlers and suppliers. Authorities noted that cross-border linkages remain a key challenge, with narcotics often being smuggled through covert routes and distributed via local networks.

Officials further stated that efforts are being strengthened to dismantle the entire supply chain—from traffickers to local distributors—through coordinated intelligence-based operations. Enhanced surveillance, stricter enforcement, and inter-agency coordination have been identified as crucial steps in combating the menace.

The surge in recoveries also reflects heightened vigilance and proactive policing, though it simultaneously signals the persistent threat posed by narcotics in the region. Experts have warned that drug trafficking not only impacts public health but also poses serious risks to youth and social stability in Jammu & Kashmir.

The government reiterated its commitment to tackling the drug menace through a multi-pronged strategy, combining enforcement with awareness and rehabilitation initiatives.
