Srinagar, Feburary 2, 2026: A moderate earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale jolted parts of Kashmir Valley on Sunday, triggering panic among residents but causing no immediate reports of casualties or damage, officials said.
According to seismic monitoring agencies, the earthquake occurred in the early hours, with its epicentre located in the Kashmir region. Tremors were felt across Srinagar, Baramulla, Anantnag, Budgam and adjoining areas, prompting people to rush out of their homes as a precautionary measure.
Officials from the Disaster Management Authority said the situation is being closely monitored and there has been no report of loss of life or major structural damage so far. Emergency response teams remain on alert as a precaution.
Residents reported brief but noticeable tremors, with some describing mild shaking of windows and household items. “It lasted for a few seconds, but it was enough to scare people,” a Srinagar resident said.
Kashmir lies in a seismically active zone, and experts have repeatedly stressed the importance of earthquake preparedness and adherence to safe construction norms.
Authorities have advised people to remain calm, avoid panic, and follow standard safety protocols in case of aftershocks.
