Kashmir Ahead

Cherry harvest gains momentum across Kashmir as farmers begin season’s first major fruit picking

Srinagar, June 8,2026- The cherry harvest season has commenced across Kashmir, bringing orchards to life and marking the beginning of one of the Valley’s most anticipated fruit harvests. From the lush orchards of Waliwar in Ganderbal to the busy packing units on the outskirts of Srinagar, farmers and labourers are working tirelessly to harvest, sort, and package fresh cherries for markets within and outside the region.

Cherry cultivation plays a significant role in Kashmir’s horticulture sector, providing livelihoods to thousands of farming families and seasonal workers. With orchards laden with ripe fruit, growers have begun picking cherries at peak freshness to ensure quality produce reaches consumers.

The harvest season has also generated employment opportunities for local labourers engaged in picking, grading, sorting, and packing operations. Packing units across Srinagar are witnessing increased activity as boxes of freshly harvested cherries are prepared for transportation to major markets across India.

Farmers remain optimistic about this year’s crop, citing favourable weather conditions and good fruit quality. The cherry season is considered an important indicator for the broader horticulture calendar in Kashmir, which later includes apple, pear, plum, and walnut harvests.

As the vibrant red fruit makes its way from orchards to markets, the annual cherry harvest once again highlights the strength of Kashmir’s horticulture economy and the hard work of its farming community.
