Srinagar, July 27,2026- Lieutenant Governor Shri Manoj Sinha on Monday chaired the introductory meeting of the newly constituted Governing Board of Gandhi Memorial College (GMC), Srinagar, at Lok Bhavan, where a wide range of academic, administrative, and infrastructure-related issues were discussed to strengthen the institution’s overall functioning.
The meeting was attended by Additional Chief Secretary, Finance Department, Shailendra Kumar; Commissioner/Secretary, Higher Education Department, Ram Niwas Sharma; Commissioner/Secretary, Department of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Achal Sethi; Director Colleges, Prof. (Dr.) S. Ajaz Bashir; President, Hindu Education Society Kashmir, Prof. B. L. Zutshi; Governing Board members Prof. Ashok Aima, Prof. Veena Pandita, Prof. Verinder Rawal, V.K. Raina, and M.K. Jalali; Dean Academic Affairs, University of Kashmir, Prof. Shariefuddin Pirzada; Dean, College Development Council, University of Kashmir, Prof. (Dr.) Aneesa Shafi; Principal, Gandhi Memorial College, Prof. Masood Ahmad Malik, along with other senior officials.
During the meeting, the Governing Board deliberated on several matters of academic and administrative importance aimed at enhancing the quality of education, improving governance, and ensuring efficient institutional management.
The Lieutenant Governor directed the authorities to formulate a comprehensive policy for streamlining the administrative and operational framework of the college. He stressed the need for transparent governance, effective institutional planning, and continuous reforms to strengthen the functioning of the educational institution.
The Board also held detailed discussions on the adoption of the Rules of Business of the Governing Board, which will provide a structured framework for decision-making and institutional governance.
Among the key issues discussed was the Grant-in-Aid to G.M. College of Education, Bantalab, Jammu, along with measures to streamline the recruitment process for teaching and non-teaching staff. The Board also reviewed proposals concerning pensionary benefits for existing staff and retired employees with effect from 2002, reflecting the administration’s commitment to addressing long-pending employee welfare matters.
Infrastructure development also figured prominently during the meeting, with members discussing the augmentation of campus infrastructure to improve academic facilities and provide a better learning environment for students. Plans to modernise classrooms, strengthen institutional resources, and create better educational infrastructure were also reviewed.
In line with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP), the Governing Board discussed the revision of the existing curriculum and the introduction of new academic courses designed to meet emerging educational and industry requirements. The proposed reforms aim to equip students with modern skills, interdisciplinary knowledge, and enhanced employability.
The meeting concluded with a commitment to implement institutional reforms that will strengthen academic excellence, improve governance, and enhance the quality of higher education at Gandhi Memorial College Srinagar.
