Kundi Mushrooms return to boost Bhaderwah livelihoods

Bhaderwah, April 8,2026- After years of dry spells, the forests of Bhaderwah are once again witnessing the return of the rare and highly prized ‘Kundi’ mushrooms, bringing renewed hope for local communities dependent on forest produce.

Recent rainfall has created favorable conditions for the growth of these wild mushrooms, which are known for their unique flavor and high market demand. Locals say the reappearance of ‘Kundi’ marks a positive environmental shift and a revival of a traditional seasonal activity.

For many residents, especially women in rural areas, mushroom foraging has become a significant source of income. Groups venture into the dense forests early in the morning to collect the mushrooms, which are later sold in local markets, helping support household expenses.

“The return of Kundi mushrooms has brought relief after years of low yield,” said a local forager, highlighting the importance of this seasonal harvest for sustaining livelihoods in the region.

Experts note that such forest-based activities not only provide economic support but also promote sustainable use of natural resources. The practice, rooted in traditional knowledge, has been passed down through generations and continues to play a crucial role in rural economies.

The revival of ‘Kundi’ mushrooms in Bhaderwah underscores the strong link between environmental conditions and livelihoods, offering both ecological and economic benefits to the region.
