Resilience in Action: The Inspiring Journey of Ghulam Mohammad Mir from Gadbugh Napora, Pulwama

The farmer’s journey is one of transformation, driven by hard work, resilience, and a strong connection to the land. Raised in a poverty-stricken area, he faced numerous hardships but was determined to change his fate. After working as a labourer in Haryana, where he gained valuable experience in vegetable cultivation, he returned home with new knowledge and began experimenting with both local and hybrid seeds. His efforts slowly but surely yielded success, turning his farm into a thriving venture. Today, he not only sustains his own livelihood but also provides employment to several workers, sharing the benefits of his success. Through his innovative and sustainable approach to farming, he has become a respected figure in his community, inspiring others to follow in his footsteps. He started planting saplings with a vision of not just growing one crop but of cultivating two plants in each plot. His goal was to grow vegetables alongside the main crops, believing that the fertile, organic soil would ensure good yields. Growing up in an area plagued by poverty, he had always dreamed of improving his life through farming. He was excited by the idea of using hybrid varieties and began planting onions, cauliflower, tomatoes, and pumpkins. He often traveled to Amritsar to purchase these seeds.While the price of seeds in his area could be as high as 400 to 500 rupees per corn cob, the hybrid seeds were available to him at a much lower cost, around 80-90 rupees, thanks to government support. This helped him expand his farming efforts. Today, he has ten workers, and together they benefit from the produce. He sees their earnings as his own, reflecting the shared prosperity. One of his worker, a Gujjar woman who lives there with her husband and children. She has got a stake in the fish farming & he treats her like his own child and is also a partner in the farming venture, making him both a shareholder and a contributor to the success of the farm.
