Kashmir Ahead

Zojila Tunnel to transform connectivity between Kashmir and Ladakh with year-round access

Srinagar, July 25,2026 The under-construction Zojila Tunnel is set to become a game-changing infrastructure project, providing all-weather connectivity between Kashmir and Ladakh and ending decades of seasonal isolation caused by heavy snowfall and harsh weather conditions.

Being developed at an estimated cost of ₹6,800 crore, the strategic tunnel will ensure uninterrupted road connectivity across the Zojila Pass, one of the country’s most challenging mountain routes. Once completed, it will significantly improve travel, reduce journey time, and facilitate the seamless movement of people and goods throughout the year.

The project is expected to provide a major boost to trade and commerce by enabling the uninterrupted transportation of essential commodities, agricultural produce, fuel, medicines, and other critical supplies between the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh. Reliable connectivity is also anticipated to strengthen local businesses, improve tourism, and create new employment opportunities across the region.

Beyond economic benefits, the Zojila Tunnel will enhance access to healthcare and education, allowing residents of remote areas to travel safely during winter months when the highway traditionally remains closed due to heavy snowfall. Improved connectivity will also support emergency services and ensure faster response during medical and disaster-related situations.

The tunnel is considered one of India’s most significant infrastructure projects in the Himalayan region and is expected to play a crucial role in regional development, national integration, and strategic connectivity. By overcoming the natural barrier of the Himalayas, the Zojila Tunnel will bring communities closer together while opening new avenues for economic growth and social development.

Once operational, the Zojila Tunnel is poised to become a landmark symbol of modern infrastructure, connecting Kashmir and Ladakh through safe, reliable, and year-round road access.
