In the heart of Ishber, Nishat, Srinagar, Umar Kumar is keeping Kashmir’s age-old pottery tradition alive. Pottery is not just his profession but a family legacy passed down through generations. His father and grandfather were also involved in this traditional craft. Using simple tools, Umar skillfully shapes clay into beautiful earthen diyas, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of Kashmir. Since 2019, the demand for handmade diyas has increased significantly, providing better employment opportunities for him and other people associated with his business. Umar works on a wholesale basis, supplying diyas to customers and helping others earn a livelihood through this traditional craft. Last year, he sold nearly 26,000 diyas during the festive season. This year, he expects sales to cross 40,000, with thousands of diyas already prepared and more orders coming in. Despite the growing popularity of modern decorative lights, Umar continues to believe in the beauty and value of handmade earthen lamps. His dedication reflects the hard work of local artisans and the importance of preserving traditional craftsmanship. Through his efforts, Umar is not only keeping his family heritage alive but also lighting up homes while supporting the local economy.
