Kathua Youth Sets an Example Through Modern Papaya Farming

A young entrepreneur from Kathua district is setting an example of self-reliance by adopting modern agricultural techniques and taking up commercial papaya cultivation. Deepak Khajuria, an unemployed youth, has moved beyond traditional farming practices to explore new opportunities in horticulture. He began planting papaya in February last year and prepared the saplings himself. His efforts have now started bearing fruit, with the plants showing promising growth and healthy fruit development. Deepak said he remains in regular contact with the Agriculture and Horticulture Departments and receives guidance and support from their officials to address farming-related queries. Chief Horticulture Officer, Kathua, Ashwani Sharma, said papaya plants generally begin fruiting within nine months. He added that papaya cultivation is a promising option not only for commercial farming but also for kitchen gardens. The department is encouraging young people to adopt commercially viable crops and explore agriculture-based livelihood opportunities. Support is also being provided to farmers under the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP). Deepak’s initiative highlights how modern farming techniques, departmental guidance and entrepreneurial spirit can help create employment opportunities and promote economic self-reliance among rural youth.
