Ganderbal Artist Showcases Pashmina Artistry Through Modern Innovation in Shawls

For the past 20 years, I have been doing this handicraftwork, said a Pashmina artist in Ganderbal, Jammu & Kashmir. This work is our heritage. Our fathers and grandfather were also associated with this work, said the artist Showkat Ahmad Lone. So I thought let me also get associated with this work. But he noticed Pashmina work was going down so he brought an innovation in the shawls by drawing famous personalities like political leaders, Bollywood actors and noted police officers and then doing Pashmina embroidery. He first started with the crafting of Mahatma Gandhi, then he included many other personalities. Showkat draws sketches first then does Pashmina embroidery with thread and a needle. He also crafted the face of the Lieutenant Governor, Shri Manoj Sinha which took him about a week’s time. Showkat wants to depict Kashmiri culture in his handcrafted shawls. This Ganderbal artist got the UT Award 2022 and a Certificate of Excellence for Innovative & Modern Craft. Showkat wants the government to take care of the handicraft artists so that they are benefitted more.
