Srinagar, November 18,2025: In a landmark achievement for Jammu and Kashmir’s medical fraternity, Dr. Rafi Ahmed Jan has become the first doctor from J&K to be awarded the prestigious Fellowship of the Indian Society of Chest Physicians. The honour was conferred during the National Conference on Pulmonary Diseases (NAPCON) held in Jaipur, marking a significant milestone for the region’s healthcare sector.
The recognition has brought national attention to both Dr. Jan and the Department of Respiratory Medicine at Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag, where he currently serves as Professor. With over two decades of service in pulmonary medicine, Dr. Jan has made extensive contributions to respiratory healthcare in the Union Territory. He previously headed the Department of Internal and Pulmonary Medicine at SKIMS, Soura, one of Kashmir’s premier medical institutions.
In 2023, Dr. Jan also became the first doctor from Kashmir to be awarded a fellowship by the Indian Association for Bronchology, further solidifying his standing in the field of interventional pulmonology. His expertise spans advanced procedures such as bronchoscopy, airway stenting, pleural interventions, and management of complex respiratory diseases.
Beyond clinical work, Dr. Jan has contributed to medical research, training programmes, and various professional bodies dedicated to respiratory care in the region.
Speaking after receiving the fellowship, Dr. Jan said the honour reflected “the collective efforts of GMC Anantnag and the wider healthcare community in Jammu and Kashmir in advancing pulmonary medicine and improving patient care.”
This achievement underscores J&K’s growing presence in national medical platforms and highlights the expanding capabilities of its respiratory healthcare ecosystem.
