Kashmir, November 11,2025-The summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar, recorded the coldest night of the season as temperatures dipped to minus 0.4 degrees Celsius last night, marking the season’s first sub-zero temperature. The chill intensified across the Valley, signalling the early onset of winter conditions.
According to the Meteorological Department (MeT), clear skies and calm winds contributed to the sharp drop in temperature. Several parts of the city witnessed a thin layer of frost early in the morning, while residents were seen lighting traditional ‘kangris’ to keep warm.
Other parts of the Kashmir Valley also experienced a significant fall in night temperatures, with Pahalgam and Gulmarg remaining the coldest among hill stations. The MeT office has forecast dry and cold weather to continue for the next few days, with the possibility of a slight dip in temperatures during early mornings and nights.
As winter tightens its grip, people have begun preparing for the harsh months ahead, stocking up on essentials like firewood and woollens. Authorities have urged residents to take precautions against cold-related ailments, especially the elderly and children.
The drop in temperature comes ahead of the region’s ‘Chillai Kalan’, the 40-day harshest winter period beginning in December, when the valley traditionally witnesses sub-zero conditions, frozen water bodies, and occasional snowfall.
