Srinagar, October 28,2025: In a major tourism development initiative, the Jammu and Kashmir Government is planning to introduce winter sports and cultural festivals in Sonamarg, replicating the successful Gulmarg model to promote adventure tourism and extend the tourist season in the region.
According to officials from the Tourism Department, the plan aims to transform Sonamarg — known as the “Meadow of Gold” — into an all-season destination by developing infrastructure for skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, snow biking, and other winter adventure activities. The government also plans to organise winter festivals, cultural programs, and local handicraft exhibitions to showcase Kashmir’s heritage and attract both domestic and international tourists.
A comprehensive roadmap is being prepared in coordination with the Department of Youth Services & Sports, Public Works Department, and Tourism Development Authorities to ensure Sonamarg’s readiness for the upcoming winter season. The focus will be on ensuring safety measures, accommodation facilities, and connectivity improvements to handle increased tourist inflow.
Officials said that the project draws inspiration from Gulmarg’s success as India’s premier winter sports hub. The government intends to replicate that model by engaging local youth, sports associations, and private stakeholders to build a sustainable winter tourism ecosystem in Sonamarg.
The initiative is expected to boost local employment, strengthen Kashmir’s tourism economy, and highlight Sonamarg’s potential as a global winter sports destination alongside Gulmarg.
