Kashmir, October 5, 2025 – Union Home Minister Amit Shah has called on every Indian family to spend at least ₹5,000 annually on Khadi products, underscoring their role in boosting rural employment and strengthening the Swadeshi movement. Speaking on Gandhi Jayanti at a Khadi India showroom in Connaught Place, Shah emphasized that embracing Khadi aligns with Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of economic self-reliance and supports Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.Shah, who demonstrated his commitment by purchasing Khadi items himself, highlighted the transformative power of Swadeshi products. “Spending ₹5,000 a year on Khadi—be it clothing, bedsheets, or towels—creates jobs for artisans and uplifts the underprivileged,” he said. “This simple act fuels India’s journey toward global leadership by 2047 while honoring Gandhi’s legacy.”
Khadi’s Resurgence and Economic Impact
The Home Minister credited the Modi government for revitalizing the Khadi industry, noting a fivefold increase in sales—from ₹33,000 crore in 2014 to over ₹1.7 lakh crore today. He recalled his own efforts in Gujarat in 2003, under then-Chief Minister Modi, to promote Khadi, which laid the foundation for its nationwide revival. “Khadi is not just fabric; it’s a symbol of self-reliance and empowerment,” Shah stated.
A Call for Swadeshi Living
Echoing PM Modi’s Mann Ki Baat, Shah urged families to adopt Swadeshi as a way of life, rejecting foreign goods and supporting local artisans. “Let’s pass this commitment to our next generation,” he said, framing the ₹5,000 annual Khadi purchase as a practical step toward building a self-reliant India. This appeal comes as part of a broader push for Make in India, with Khadi serving as a cornerstone of sustainable livelihoods and cultural pride. Shah’s message resonates as a call to action for every Indian to contribute to the nation’s economic and social progress.
