Jammu, August 30, 2025: In response to severe disruptions caused by heavy rainfall and flash floods in Jammu and Kashmir, Northern Railways has announced the operation of two reserved special trains from Jammu Tawi station on August 30 to assist stranded passengers. The initiative, overseen by Divisional Commissioner Jammu Ramesh Kumar, aims to alleviate the plight of thousands, including pilgrims and tourists, affected by the cancellation of regular train services and road closures due to flooding and landslides. The first special train, bound for Chhapra, will depart Jammu Tawi at 5:00 PM, traveling via Ludhiana, Moradabad, Gonda, and Basti. It will feature one 2nd AC coach, ten 3rd AC economy coaches, five sleeper coaches, and four general coaches.
The second train, heading to Dr. Ambedkar Nagar (DADN) in Mhow, will leave at3:00 PM, following a route through Ludhiana, New Delhi, Gwalior, and Bhopal, with two 2nd AC coaches, one 1st AC coach, four 3rd AC coaches, two 3rd AC economy coaches, six sleeper coaches, and four general coaches. These trains are designed to cater to the urgent travel needs of passengers stranded due to the ongoing flood crisis, which has disrupted the Jammu-Srinagar and Jammu-Pathankot highways and damaged infrastructure like the Fourth Tawi Bridge.Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Paramdeep Singh Saini emphasised Northern Railways’ commitment to passenger safety and convenience, stating, “These special trains are a critical step to ensure stranded passengers, including those returning from the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine, reach their destinations safely.” The railway administration has also arranged food and water at key stations like Jammu, Kathua, and Pathankot Cantt, with community kitchens (langars) set up in collaboration with local NGOs to support stranded travellers.
The floods, triggered by unprecedented monsoon rains, led to the cancellation of 58 trains and the short-termination or diversion of 64 others on August 28, leaving hundreds stranded at Jammu Tawi and Katra stations. The Indian Army’s restoration of the Tawi Bridge with a Bailey bridge has eased some road connectivity issues, but rail services remain critical.
