In a remarkable initiative, 17-year-old Arav Kaul, a Class 11 student at Dhirubhai Ambani International School in Mumbai, has launched Project Zul, a STEM program aimed at introducing robotics and coding to students in Jammu and Kashmir. Launched in spring 2025, this groundbreaking effort targets students in grades 9 and 10, equipping them with hands-on skills in microcontroller programming to foster innovation and technological growth in the region.
Arav, an international robotics champion who has represented India at global competitions like FIRST, Robotex, and MakeX, was inspired to start Project Zul due to his personal connection to Jammu and Kashmir through his father’s roots. His vision is to make STEM education accessible and engaging, emphasizing creative problem-solving through technology. “Robotics isn’t just about technology—it’s about solving problems and thinking creatively,” Arav stated, highlighting his goal of empowering young minds.
Project Zul has already made significant strides. Over the past few months, Arav has trained teachers from 15 government and private schools across Jammu and Kashmir, both in-person and online, equipping them with the skills to teach robotics. Additionally, he has distributed free Arduino kits to students, ensuring they have the tools to build functional gadgets and innovative solutions. The initiative has been praised by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha for aligning with the region’s goals of technological transformation and youth empowerment.
A final showcase scheduled later this month will allow students to present their creations, ranging from practical devices to inventive prototypes, demonstrating the impact of Project Zul. By bridging the gap between urban expertise and regional aspirations, Arav Kaul’s initiative is paving the way for a new generation of innovators in Jammu and Kashmir.
