Srinagar, May 9, 2025: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha held an urgent security review meeting in Srinagar today, assessing the volatile situation in Jammu and Kashmir amid escalating cross-border threats from Pakistan. The meeting, attended by senior police, military, and administrative officials, including Deputy Commissioners of border districts, focused on strengthening defenses and ensuring civilian safety following recent provocations along the Line of Control .
The LG’s actions were spurred by Pakistan’s aggressive response to India’s Operation Sindoor, a retaliatory strike launched on May 7 targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Pakistan’s Punjab province. The operation was a response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 civilians and security personnel. Since then, Pakistan has intensified shelling in border areas like Kupwara, Poonch, and Rajouri, coupled with drone and missile strikes on military installations in Jammu, Pathankot, and Udhampur.
“Vigilance is paramount,” LG Sinha stated. “I have instructed all border district authorities to relocate villagers from high-risk zones to secure locations and ensure robust coordination with the Indian Army and CRPF.” The LG also commended the armed forces for their swift response, particularly in neutralizing eight Pakistani missiles targeting Jammu on May 8, an incident that triggered citywide sirens and a temporary blackout.
The ongoing conflict has disrupted daily life, with schools and colleges in J&K and Punjab closed until May 12 and 27 northern Indian airports, including Jammu, non-operational until May 10. Evacuations are underway in vulnerable border villages, and local hospitals have been placed on high alert. The Indian Air Force and S-400 defense systems remain active, countering repeated Pakistani incursions.
Tensions trace back to intelligence reports alleging Pakistan’s ISI is collaborating with terror groups, including Hamas operatives in PoK, to destabilize the region. LG Sinha reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding J&K, urging residents to stay calm but alert. “We are prepared for any challenge,” he assured, emphasizing enhanced patrolling and intelligence-sharing.
