Jammu, March 13 I 2025 – Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has ordered the remission of life imprisonment for three convicts from the Jammu region, granting them an early release after serving significant portions of their sentences. The decision, announced on Wednesday, was made under Section 473 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) 2023, in line with directives from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The convicts—Anil Singh from Shastri Nagar, Jammu; Dev Raj from Chak Jaffray, Kana Chak, Jammu; and Girdhari Lal from Mangnar, Poonch—had been sentenced under Sections 302, 34, and 201 of the erstwhile Ranbir Penal Code for serious offenses. Having served between 14 and 16 years of their life terms, their remaining sentences have been remitted effective immediately, subject to strict conditions. These include regular reporting to local police and maintaining social peace, with authorities warning that any violation could lead to the cancellation of their remission.
Officials stated that the move reflects a balanced approach to justice, acknowledging the time served while ensuring public safety through ongoing monitoring. The Jammu and Kashmir Home Department issued a notification formalizing the order, emphasizing compliance with the legal framework outlined in the BNSS 2023.
This development has sparked discussions on the application of remission policies in the Union Territory, with the local police tasked to oversee the convicts’ reintegration into society.
