J&K LG Manoj Sinha attends 60th anniversary of World Crafts Council in Srinagar

SRINAGAR, NOVEMBER 26: Lieutenant Governor Shri Manoj Sinha today participated in the 60th anniversary celebration of the World Crafts Council (WCC) in Srinagar, an event that showcased the rich traditions of handicrafts and handlooms. The celebration brought together distinguished artisans, designers, creative leaders, and stakeholders from around the world.

In his address, the Lieutenant Governor extended his felicitations to the delegates and artisans, commending the efforts of the Ministry of Textiles, Ministry of External Affairs, Department of Industries & Commerce, J&K, and the World Crafts Council for promoting India’s priceless artistic and cultural heritage. He emphasized the government’s commitment to unlocking the potential of the handloom and handicrafts sector in Jammu and Kashmir.

“My dream is to make ‘Made in Jammu Kashmir’ creative products famous worldwide and an integral part of households everywhere,” said LG Sinha. He outlined the government’s focus on fostering global cooperation and strengthening connections with international markets to enhance the global visibility of J&K’s handicrafts.

The Lieutenant Governor also highlighted several key initiatives aimed at empowering artisans and boosting the sector, including the J&K Wool Processing, Handicrafts and Handloom Policy 2020, financial support schemes for cooperatives and self-help groups, the Credit Card Scheme for Artisans, Karkhandar Scheme, and the Craft Bazar Revival Initiative. These efforts, he noted, reflect the government’s determination to drive holistic development in the sector, improve the livelihoods of artisans, and promote export opportunities.

“We are also working on integrating crafts into tourism and positioning Jammu Kashmir as a prime cultural destination. This will not only attract international visitors but also strengthen the local economy,” he added, underscoring the importance of the tourism industry in supporting the region’s crafts and artisans.

The Lieutenant Governor also paid tribute to Smt. Kamala Devi Chattopadhyay, an Indian craft pioneer and one of the founders of the World Crafts Council, acknowledging her contribution to the promotion of handicrafts and her efforts in empowering women and artisans.

The event also featured the launch of the “Seal of Authenticity for Crafts,” aimed at maintaining the quality and authenticity of creative products. The Lieutenant Governor visited the Craft Exhibition, inspecting stalls showcasing work by local, national, and international artisans. He also felicitated artisans who have excelled in their craft.

In addition, the World Crafts Council City Book, marking 60 years of the WCC’s journey, was released.
