Documentary: Learning Beyond Limits I Educating the Specially Abled Children of Kashmir Reading has always been a passion, along with a keen interest in continuing studies in the future, said a specially-abled child. At an Education Centre for the Specially-Abled in Srinagar, students receive excellent guidance. In addition to regular school lessons, a resource centre provides dedicated teaching where children learn many new things effectively.
In Srinagar, there are eight educational zones, each with special educators and resource persons working with children with special needs. Around 1,700 children in the district have been identified as requiring special support. These children are carefully assessed to determine the type of disability, which may include hidden disabilities such as autism, learning difficulties, or slow learning. Some disabilities are not easily visible, so proper evaluation is essential. Following assessment, special educational and therapeutic plans are developed for each child.
Children with disabilities require extra patience and repeated efforts to learn. While typical students may grasp a lesson in one or two attempts, these children often need the same lesson five to ten times. Teachers use specialised strategies and techniques to help retain information and improve skills. Short-term memory challenges are common, so consistent guidance and support are essential.
Technology plays a crucial role in learning. Blind children use smartphones and computers, while children with mobility challenges benefit from electric wheelchairs. Continuous support from teachers and resource centres allows children to gain confidence and make significant progress. Educators approach this work with sincerity, understanding that every effort contributes to the children’s growth. Despite challenges, these children possess unique talents and potential. With patience, care, and proper guidance, learning and success become possible for these specially-abled children in Jammu & Kashmir.
