BARAMULLA, JANUARY 21 – In a significant initiative to promote environmental cleanliness in the run-up to Republic Day, Deputy Commissioner Baramulla, Minga Sherpa, launched the ‘Clean River Jhelum Campaign’. The campaign, which will run from January 21 to January 25, 2025, aims to clean the banks of the River Jhelum and raise public awareness about environmental conservation.
Organised by the Housing and Urban Development Department Kashmir, in collaboration with the Municipal Council (MC) Baramulla, the campaign will focus on cleaning the riverbanks, collecting waste, and educating the public on the importance of preserving natural resources. Volunteers and local residents will participate in various clean-up activities throughout the week.
At the launch event, DC Minga Sherpa emphasised the critical role the River Jhelum plays in the region’s heritage and ecosystem. “The River Jhelum is not just a waterway but an integral part of our culture and history. This campaign is a call to action for all of us to take responsibility for its cleanliness and sustainability, ensuring that it remains a valuable resource for future generations,” he stated.
The campaign is part of the ongoing efforts by the Housing and Urban Development Department Kashmir to improve urban cleanliness, promote environmental awareness, and foster sustainable development practices across the region. By engaging the local community, the initiative seeks to inspire collective action toward maintaining a cleaner and greener environment.
