Kashmir Ahead

A dairy farm and vermicompost unit is creating new livelihood opportunities by combining livestock farming with sustainable agricultural practices. The enterprise currently has more than 20 cows and heifers, while a vermicompost unit was established with support from the Agriculture Department in 2025. The unit uses cow dung, often described as “black gold,” as the primary raw material for producing organic manure. The process involves collecting and storing the cow dung, allowing it to decompose for around three months, followed by drying and sieving to separate the finished material from other components. According to those working at the unit, the initiative has generated employment for several people. Around five to ten workers are associated with the dairy and vermicompost activities, providing them with a source of income to support their families. Workers said the earnings have helped them meet household expenses and support their children’s education. The enterprise has also created demand for vermicompost, with the owner saying that the product is increasingly sought after by farmers. The entrepreneur expressed gratitude to the Agriculture Department and the Jammu and Kashmir Government for supporting such livelihood initiatives. He also encouraged unemployed and educated youth to explore government schemes and consider agriculture-based enterprises. The initiative demonstrates how livestock waste can be converted into useful organic manure while generating employment and supporting sustainable rural livelihoods.
