CM Omar Abdullah chairs a review meeting on snow clearance via video conference

In a proactive step to address the challenges posed by heavy snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah recently chaired a review meeting via video conference to evaluate the preparedness and progress of snow clearance operations across the region. The meeting was aimed at ensuring the smooth functioning of essential services, infrastructure, and transportation networks, which are often severely disrupted during the winter months due to snowfall. Omar Abdullah, known for his active engagement with public welfare, emphasized the importance of timely and efficient snow clearance to prevent hardships for the residents, especially in remote areas. He instructed the concerned authorities to deploy the necessary resources, including snow plows and manual labor, to clear roads, pathways, and critical infrastructure in a swift and effective manner. During the video conference, senior officials from the Public Works Department and other relevant agencies provided detailed updates on the ongoing snow clearance operations in different districts of the Kashmir Valley, including key highways, arterial roads, and the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway. The Chief Minister underscored the significance of prioritising snow clearance on vital routes to ensure that emergency services, including medical and emergency relief teams, can reach areas in need of assistance without delay. The meeting also focused on ensuring the smooth functioning of power supply lines, as heavy snowfall can often cause disruptions by bringing down power poles and cables. Omar Abdullah directed the authorities to take preventive measures and maintain a close watch on weather conditions to ensure the timely restoration of electricity in affected areas. One of the key highlights of the review meeting was the emphasis on effective coordination between various departments, including the PWD, Revenue Department, Police, and Disaster Management teams, to create a comprehensive approach towards snow clearance. The Chief Minister stressed the need for a collaborative effort to manage the challenges of snowfall, as well as to ensure that the citizens are informed about road closures, weather advisories, and other crucial updates. In light of the severe weather conditions, the Chief Minister also urged the people of Jammu and Kashmir to exercise caution while traveling during the snow season and to stay updated on road conditions and weather forecasts. He assured the public that the government was fully committed to ensuring their safety and well-being during the harsh winter months. Furthermore, Omar Abdullah highlighted the importance of adopting new technologies and innovations for better snow clearance and disaster management. He called for exploring more efficient methods, including snow-melting solutions and improved machinery, to reduce the time required for snow removal and ensure smoother travel and daily activities. As snowfall continues to blanket the region, the government’s proactive measures and the Chief Minister’s timely intervention reflect a dedicated effort to minimise disruptions and ensure that the people of Jammu and Kashmir remain safe and connected during the winter season.
