A progressive farmer from Jammu and Kashmir’s Budgam district is setting an inspiring example of entrepreneurship and self-reliance through lavender cultivation, value-added products and commercial floriculture. On the occasion of UT Foundation Day, the farmer shared his inspiring journey in the presence of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, highlighting how dedication, innovation and government support can transform traditional farming into a sustainable business venture. Beginning his lavender cultivation journey in 2016, the farmer has gradually expanded his operations to nearly six acres of land. Along with lavender, he cultivates medicinal plants and other varieties of flowers, exploring new opportunities in the floriculture sector. Taking his agricultural venture a step further, he has established a distillation unit on his farm to extract essential oils from different flowers. He has also developed several value-added products under his own brand, Mir Aromatics, creating additional sources of income beyond conventional farming. Speaking about his journey, the farmer said that he received financial assistance of approximately Rs 1.5 lakh through government support facilitated by the Floriculture Department. The assistance helped him expand his activities and strengthen his business. His efforts have also benefited other farmers, as he shares his experience, promotes innovative cultivation techniques and encourages people to explore lavender farming and commercial floriculture. Today, his venture is not only contributing to his own livelihood but is also creating employment opportunities and encouraging greater participation in agricultural entrepreneurship. His journey highlights the growing potential of lavender cultivation, essential oil production and value addition in Jammu and Kashmir. By combining traditional agricultural knowledge with modern techniques, farmers can diversify their income, strengthen rural economies and develop sustainable business opportunities. The success story of Mir Aromatics reflects the spirit of entrepreneurship, innovation and Aatmanirbhar Jammu and Kashmir. It also demonstrates how institutional support, access to government schemes and individual determination can help farmers build successful enterprises while inspiring the next generation to explore agriculture as a promising career.
