Jammu, March 31, 2025 – Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to visit Jammu and Kashmir on April 7-8, 2025, to assess the region’s security situation. The visit comes amid an ongoing anti-terror operation in Kathua, where security forces are engaged in efforts to neutralise threats along the Indo-Pak border. Shah’s two-day tour is expected to focus on reviewing counter-insurgency operations, strengthening border security, and evaluating the progress of the government’s zero-infiltration policy.
During his visit, Shah will chair a high-level security review meeting in Jammu, attended by senior officials from the J&K administration, the Indian Army, central paramilitary forces, and intelligence agencies. Discussions will center on measures to intensify the fight against terrorism, with a particular emphasis on curbing infiltration from across the border. Sources indicate that the Home Minister may also visit forward areas in the Jammu region, including along the International Border (IB), to meet troops deployed for border security and assess ground-level operations firsthand.
The visit follows recent statements from Shah, who has reiterated the Modi government’s commitment to a terrorism-free Jammu and Kashmir. On March 28, 2025, at a summit in New Delhi, he highlighted the peaceful conduct of last year’s Assembly elections and promised the restoration of statehood to the region, though no specific timeline was provided. Shah also noted the declining influence of separatism, citing the decision of two groups linked to the Hurriyat Conference to sever ties with separatist ideologies as a sign of progress under the current administration.
The timing of the visit is significant, as security forces continue to grapple with sporadic terror incidents in the Union Territory. The ongoing operation in Kathua underscores the challenges of maintaining stability in the region, particularly in areas close to the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border. Shah is expected to address these issues, reinforcing the government’s aggressive stance against terrorism and its focus on uprooting the terrorist ecosystem in J&K.
In addition to security matters, Shah’s itinerary may include a review of developmental activities, aligning with the central government’s broader agenda for the region post the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. The Home Minister’s visit to both Jammu and Kashmir regions signals a comprehensive approach to addressing both security and governance challenges.
This will be Shah’s first visit to Jammu and Kashmir since the formation of the National Conference-led government under Chief Minister Omar Abdullah following the Assembly elections in October 2024. The visit is seen as a continuation of the central government’s efforts to maintain close oversight of the Union Territory, which was bifurcated into Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh after the revocation of its special status.
As the situation in Kathua unfolds, all eyes will be on Shah’s announcements and the outcomes of the security review, which could set the tone for future operations in the region. With the government pushing for zero infiltration and a decisive end to terrorism, this visit underscores the priority placed on stabilizing Jammu and Kashmir.
