Raja Amir, an MSc Fisheries graduate from SKUAST-Kashmir, is setting an inspiring example of self-reliance and entrepreneurship in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir. With support from the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), he has established a fish farming enterprise in Sigdi, Mughal Maidan, creating employment opportunities for himself and his family. Amir approached the Fisheries Department and received four fish farming units under the government scheme, along with a 50% subsidy. Since 2022, he has been engaged in fish production and has also opened an outlet named Alpine Route in Kishtwar town to sell his products. Amir expressed gratitude to the government for introducing the scheme, which helped him achieve financial independence and meet his family’s basic needs. He believes fish farming offers good earning potential for people who have suitable locations and reliable water resources. His journey demonstrates how education, government support, and entrepreneurial spirit can help young people build sustainable livelihoods. By turning his academic knowledge into a practical business, Amir has not only secured employment for himself but has also contributed to his family’s economic well-being. His success serves as an inspiration for unemployed youth to explore government schemes, embrace entrepreneurship, and become self-reliant while contributing to the local economy.
