Jammu’s Smart Waste Management Model Turns Garbage into Revenue

The Jammu Cantonment Board is setting an example in sustainable urban waste management by transforming waste into a source of revenue through an organised system of segregation, processing and recycling. Under the initiative, waste collected from households is segregated into wet and dry categories and processed at a Material Recovery Facility (MRF). Wet waste is converted into organic compost, while dry waste is sorted into 12–15 categories for recycling and further processing. The initiative aims to reduce the amount of waste dumped at open landfills and promote scientific waste disposal. By ensuring that recyclable materials are separated and sold, the Cantonment Board is turning discarded waste into an economic resource while improving local cleanliness. According to officials, the initiative has started generating revenue through the sale of recovered waste materials. In the initial phase, the sanitation team is reportedly generating around ₹60,000–₹70,000 per month from these sales. The model highlights how effective waste segregation, recycling and resource recovery can contribute to both environmental protection and financial sustainability. It also underlines the importance of an organised collection system and the efforts of sanitation workers in maintaining cleaner surroundings. Jammu Cantonment Board’s initiative demonstrates the potential of waste management systems to reduce landfill pressure, encourage recycling and create revenue opportunities, offering a practical example of sustainable urban development.
