Kashmir Ahead

Srinagar engineer launches WildPing.org, a free alert platform to protect communities from wildlife attacks

Srinagar, October 13,2026-A software engineer from Srinagar has developed a free wildlife alert platform intended to help residents stay safe from wild animal attacks. Mudasir Ali created WildPing.org after losing his mother in a bear attack in 2020, a short distance from their home.

The platform has been launched at a time when Kashmir has recorded several recent bear attacks and wildlife sightings, which have heightened concerns over increasing human-wildlife conflict.

Origin of the initiative

Mudasir said the tragedy motivated him to work towards preventing similar incidents. He described the platform as a tribute to his mother.

“If it helps even one family avoid the pain that mine went through, every hour spent building it will have been worth it,” he said.

Reporting and alerts

Through WildPing, any person can report a sighting of a bear, leopard or other wild animal in their locality within seconds. A live map displays recent sightings, allowing residents to view reported animal activity in their surroundings.

Users may also create watch zones around locations of importance to them, including their homes, farms, workplaces and their children’s schools. Where a sighting is reported within a 2.5-kilometre radius of a designated watch zone, the user receives an instant alert. This enables them to avoid the area or take appropriate precautions.

Safeguards against false reports

To maintain the reliability of the information shared, the platform employs several safeguards. These include user verification, limits on repeated reports, and a provision for the community to flag false information. The measures are intended to reduce fake alerts and preserve public confidence in the warnings issued.

Accessibility and cost

WildPing operates on both Android and iPhone devices through a web browser, so users can install it without downloading an application from an app store. The platform supports English, Hindi and Urdu, extending its reach to a wider section of the population.

It is completely free to use, with no advertisements and no subscription charges.

Complementing official efforts

Mudasir clarified that the platform is not intended to replace the Wildlife Protection Department. He said its purpose is to provide communities with an early warning that could help save lives.

By enabling residents to share sightings with one another in real time, the platform may serve as a supplementary layer of awareness while official agencies carry out their own response measures.

Relevance for the Valley

Human-wildlife conflict has emerged as a growing concern in parts of Kashmir, where settlements, orchards and farmland often lie close to forested areas. Residents in such localities frequently travel to fields, orchards and schools that may fall within the range of wild animals.

In this context, a community-based alert system can be of practical use. A parent may be notified before children leave for school, and a farmer may avoid a field where an animal has been reported.

Public advisory

Residents are generally advised to observe basic precautions in areas where wildlife movement has been reported:

  • Avoid venturing alone near forested areas, particularly at dawn and dusk.
  • Keep children and livestock indoors when a sighting is reported nearby.
  • Do not approach or provoke a wild animal.
  • Report every sighting to the Wildlife Protection Department.

Outlook

The effectiveness of the platform will depend largely on public participation. A greater number of users reporting sightings and creating watch zones would lead to faster and more accurate alerts.

As human-wildlife encounters remain a matter of concern in the Valley, community-driven tools such as WildPing may offer an additional measure of safety to families living close to forest areas.
