Srinagar, March 31,2026-In a significant step towards strengthening quality assurance and global credibility of Kashmir’s famed Pashmina, the Department of Handicrafts and Handloom Kashmir has upgraded its testing facilities with state-of-the-art microscopes, enhancing both efficiency and accuracy in certification processes.
The move is aimed at ensuring the authenticity of Pashmina products, which are renowned worldwide for their fine quality and craftsmanship. Officials said the introduction of advanced microscopic technology will enable faster and more precise identification of genuine Pashmina fibers, thereby safeguarding the interests of artisans and consumers alike.
The upgraded testing mechanism is expected to significantly boost the issuance of Geographical Indication (GI) certification tags, a crucial marker that authenticates products originating from a specific region and adhering to defined standards. Authorities emphasized that the enhanced system will help curb the sale of counterfeit products in the market, a long-standing challenge faced by the Pashmina industry.
Experts noted that traditional testing methods often required more time and manual effort, whereas the new microscopes offer high-resolution fiber analysis, improving turnaround time for certification. This will not only streamline the process for artisans but also strengthen trust among buyers in domestic and international markets.
Officials further reiterated their commitment to preserving Kashmir’s rich handicraft heritage while embracing modern technology to ensure sustainability and competitiveness. The initiative is also expected to provide a major boost to exports and enhance the economic prospects of thousands of artisans associated with the sector.
The department has been taking continuous measures to modernize infrastructure and promote authentic Kashmiri handicrafts, aligning with broader efforts to position the Union Territory as a hub of high-quality handmade products.
