LG Manoj Sinha: J&K leads India in trout production, highlights fisheries growth at Srinagar conference

Srinagar, March 14,2026- Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Saturday addressed the National Conference on Cold Water Fisheries in Srinagar, highlighting the significant growth in fish production and major infrastructure upgrades in the fisheries sector across the Union Territory since 2020.

Speaking at the conference, the Lieutenant Governor said that Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a remarkable surge in fish production over the past few years, largely driven by strategic government initiatives aimed at strengthening the fisheries ecosystem and empowering fish farmers.

He noted that these initiatives have positioned Jammu and Kashmir as the leader in trout production among all cold-water states in India, creating new opportunities for entrepreneurship and sustainable livelihoods in the sector.

The Lieutenant Governor also highlighted the role of the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP), launched in 2022, which has provided a major boost to the fisheries sector in the Union Territory. Under the programme, an allocation of Rs 233 crore has been earmarked to promote fisheries development.

He said the funding is being utilized to incentivize entrepreneurship, establish modern hatcheries, expand trout farming units, and promote value-added ventures linked to fish production. The initiative aims to strengthen the fisheries value chain while generating employment opportunities in rural areas.

The Lieutenant Governor reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to empowering fish farmers through improved infrastructure, financial support, training, and better market access. He emphasized that these efforts are focused on ensuring long-term prosperity for those dependent on fisheries and aquaculture.

The conference brought together experts, policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders from across the country to deliberate on the future of cold-water fisheries, technological advancements in aquaculture, and sustainable practices to enhance fish production.

Officials said that with continued investments, scientific support, and policy interventions, Jammu and Kashmir is set to further strengthen its position as a leading hub for trout farming and cold-water fisheries in India.
