Kashmir Ahead

Kathua, October 30,2026- At a time when many young people are searching for employment opportunities, Deepak Khajuria, an unemployed youth from Kathua, has taken an encouraging step towards self-employment by adopting commercial papaya farming using modern agricultural techniques.

His initiative highlights the growing potential of agriculture and horticulture as sustainable livelihood options for young people in Jammu and Kashmir. By exploring commercial fruit cultivation, Deepak is demonstrating how modern farming practices can create opportunities beyond traditional employment.

The initiative also reflects the changing approach of rural youth towards agriculture, with increasing interest in high-value commercial crops and innovative farming methods.

Chief Horticulture Officer Kathua, Ashwani Sharma, said the department is encouraging young people to take up commercial crop cultivation and supporting their efforts through various government initiatives.

He highlighted the role of the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP) in providing assistance and promoting agricultural entrepreneurship across the region.

Through such initiatives, the horticulture department aims to strengthen the rural economy, encourage self-employment and help farmers explore new income-generating opportunities.

Deepak’s journey serves as an example of how young people can turn towards agriculture-based enterprises and contribute to the development of the local economy. His efforts may also inspire other unemployed youth to explore modern horticulture as a promising career option.
