Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Boosts maternal nutrition in Shopian

Shopian, February 27, 2026:In a focused initiative to strengthen maternal health and nutrition, a Nutritional Kit Distribution Programme was successfully organised for pregnant women in Shopian. The programme was conducted by the Sankalp Hub for Empowerment of Women (SHEW), Mission Shakti Shopian, in collaboration with the Department of Health, Shopian at the Sub District Hospital Sedow.

The initiative was implemented under the flagship Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) scheme, which aims to improve the child sex ratio, promote gender equality, and empower women and girls through coordinated, multi-sectoral efforts. The programme aligned closely with the objectives of Mission Shakti, an umbrella initiative of the Ministry of Women and Child Development focused on women’s safety, security, and empowerment.

The event specifically targeted expectant mothers, highlighting the crucial role of proper nutrition during pregnancy for the health and well-being of both mother and child. Health officials emphasised the importance of balanced diets, essential micronutrients, and timely supplementation in reducing maternal and infant health risks, particularly in rural and sub-district areas.

During the programme, nutritional kits containing essential dietary supplements and health-supporting provisions were distributed to pregnant women visiting the hospital. The distribution was complemented by awareness interactions, during which healthcare professionals and Mission Shakti representatives provided guidance on healthy pregnancy practices, nutrition planning, and preventive care.

Officials from SHEW, Mission Shakti, and the Health Department reiterated their commitment to strengthening convergent approaches that address women’s health at the grassroots level. They noted that initiatives like these not only support maternal nutrition but also contribute to broader goals of family welfare, women’s empowerment, and community development.

The successful conduct of the Nutritional Kit Distribution Programme at SDH Sedow reflects the district administration’s continued efforts to effectively implement national schemes at the local level. By addressing nutritional gaps and enhancing awareness, such initiatives play a vital role in improving maternal and child health indicators and ensuring a healthier future generation.
