Abid Hussain, vegetable farmer in Rajouri, Jammu & Kashmir says, we used to grow corn but there is no benefit in it. Now we grow vegetables such as radish, spinach, kadam, turnip, coriander. There is a lot of hard work.There are 50 houses in the village. From each household, the members including wives work. This small village is famous for vegetables. People from far come hetre to buy vegetables. Our vegetables are taken at 20 rupees per kilo, 30 rupees per kilo and we have to provide our own labour in which Rs 1000/Rs 500 goes. We grow local vegetables which is prepared from cow dung manure and no fertilisers are used. Today, agriculture is about sustainable farming, says Rajesh Verma, Chief Agriculture Officer. More attention is being paid to sustainable agriculture. To promote the concept of natural farming which our elders used to do, in which farmers need not buy anything from outside, along with this, we have identified clusters for organic farming. In natural farming, there is an alternative agricultural system in HADP. We have identified such people and they are being given training, said the Agriculture Officer in J&K’s Rajouri.
