SRINAGAR, JULY 29: In a significant step towards preserving and promoting Kashmir’s rich artistic legacy, the University of Kashmir, in collaboration with the Jammu & Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages (JKAACL), is set to launch a Diploma Course in Calligraphy. The initiative aims to revive interest in traditional Islamic and Kashmiri calligraphy and equip students with professional-level skills in this intricate art form.
Officials from both institutions confirmed that the diploma programme will cover various classical styles such as Naskh, Thuluth, Nastaliq, and Shikasta, while also offering modules in modern calligraphic expression. The course will be open to students, artists, and calligraphy enthusiasts from across the region.
The Vice Chancellor of Kashmir University emphasized that this is part of a broader strategy to integrate art education into mainstream academia, enabling the youth to connect with their cultural roots while also exploring new creative avenues.
Secretary JKAACL, while announcing the collaboration, noted that Kashmir has historically been a centre of fine calligraphy, and this diploma course will help institutionalize traditional knowledge systems and create livelihood opportunities for local artists.
The course will commence later this year, and applications will be invited through the University’s official portal.
