Kashmiri hawker saves tourist in Pahalgam attack, calls It “Murder of Humanity”

Pahalgam, April 24, 2025: Sajad Ahmad Bhat, a local shawl hawker in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, emerged as a hero during the deadly terror attack at Baisaran meadow on April 22, 2025, which killed 26 people, mostly tourists. Amid the gunfire, Bhat risked his life to carry an injured tourist to safety, an act of bravery that has resonated deeply. Speaking to reporters, Bhat condemned the attack, stating, “This is a murder of humanity, and the entire Kashmir. It would’ve been better had they killed us, the Kashmiris. This was a cowardly act. This is the first time I have seen such an incident. The entire Kashmir is in shock.”

The attack, one of the region’s worst, led to a valley-wide shutdown on April 23, with schools and businesses closing in protest. Bhat’s courage reflects Kashmiriyat—compassion and unity—contrasting sharply with the violence that targeted tourists, a cornerstone of Kashmir’s economy. “This land thrives on peace and visitors. Such acts harm our home,” he said, echoing local sentiments.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh vowed a strong response to apprehend the attackers, while the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police have ramped up operations. The attack caused travel disruptions, including the closure of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, stranding tourists. In response, the Muslim community in Rajouri opened mosques to provide shelter, showcasing solidarity.

Bhat’s bravery and powerful words have inspired widespread admiration, underscoring the resilience of Kashmiris and their commitment to humanity amid tragedy.
