SRINAGAR, April 17, 2025 – Cricket fervour is set to sweep the Kashmir Valley as the Epic Victory Cricket League , a franchise-based T20 tournament, announced its inaugural season to commence in September 2025. Former Indian cricketers Irfan Pathan and Praveen Kumar launched the initiative at a press conference at Radisson Rajbagh, Srinagar, revealing plans for talent trials across 20 cities to unearth raw cricketing talent from Jammu and Kashmir and beyond.
The EVCL, scheduled from June 15 to July 1, 2025, aims to blend young, inexperienced players with seasoned domestic cricketers in a mentorship-driven format. Pathan, a former all-rounder and mentor to J&K’s cricket team, emphasized the untapped potential in Kashmir, stating, “There is raw cricketing talent in Kashmir that deserves the spotlight. We saw last year how young players grow when given a platform with professionals.” He highlighted a left-arm pacer from Kupwara as an example of the region’s promise, stressing the need for opportunities to nurture such talent.
Praveen Kumar, known for his swing bowling, echoed Pathan’s enthusiasm, noting the passion for cricket in the Valley. The duo will oversee trials in cities across J&K, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and other regions, aiming to create a competitive yet developmental platform. The league will feature players from diverse backgrounds, fostering a unique blend of youth and experience, with mentors guiding aspiring cricketers on and off the field.
Pathan also called for infrastructure improvements, particularly the development of turf pitches, as many districts in Kashmir still rely on matting wickets. He urged cooperation with cricketing authorities to ensure long-term growth, adding, “Private leagues like EVCL can unlock potential, but sustained progress needs systemic support.” The initiative follows the success of recent cricket events in Kashmir, such as the Legends League Cricket matches in October 2024, which drew massive crowds to Srinagar’s Bakshi Stadium.
The EVCL is positioned as a cricketing movement to empower grassroots talent, bridge aspiration and achievement, and inspire young players, including female cricketers, in Kashmir. With trials set to begin soon, the league promises to bring high-octane T20 action to the Valley, reigniting hopes of hosting IPL and international matches in the future.
