Women’s Cricket Tournament concludes in Handwara

Handwara, October 7,2026– Government Girls Higher Secondary School Handwara emerged champions in the women’s T-10 cricket tournament, defeating Monarch Secondary School in the final played at DPL Kulangam. The eight-day event concluded with a formal closing ceremony attended by officials, educationists, coaches, parents and a large gathering of spectators.

The tournament brought together teams from schools in the area and was organised to promote teamwork, discipline and greater participation of girls in sports.

Batting first in the final, the Government Girls Higher Secondary School side posted a competitive total through disciplined running between the wickets and well-timed boundaries. Monarch Secondary School mounted a determined chase, and the contest remained closely fought for much of the innings. However, tight bowling and sharp fielding by the eventual winners maintained pressure in the closing overs, and they secured the title. Spectators praised the standard of play and the composure displayed by the young cricketers of both teams.

Played in the T-10 format, with each side facing a maximum of ten overs, the tournament featured group-stage and knockout fixtures over eight days. The shorter format enabled a larger number of teams to participate within a limited timeframe and gave more girls an opportunity to play competitive cricket. Several matches were decided in the final overs.

Addressing the gathering, the chief guests and organisers stressed the importance of sports in the holistic development of young people. They said team games like cricket instil cooperation, respect for rules, resilience and the ability to accept both victory and defeat with grace. Speakers highlighted the participation of girls as a positive development, noting that involvement in outdoor sports builds confidence, promotes physical fitness and helps break traditional stereotypes. Parents and teachers were urged to continue encouraging students with an interest in sports alongside their academic pursuits.

During the ceremony, the championship trophy was presented to the winning team, while the runners-up, Monarch Secondary School, were also felicitated. Individual awards were conferred on outstanding performers, including the best batter, best bowler and player of the tournament. The dignitaries congratulated the winners and commended all participating teams for their sportsmanship. The organisers were also appreciated for the smooth conduct of the tournament.

Coaches and educationists called for the regular organisation of similar tournaments at the local level, stating that consistent competition is vital for the development of young athletes. They also emphasised the need for improved sports infrastructure, including well-maintained grounds and professional coaching, to help talented girls progress to higher levels. Participants expressed hope that the event would inspire more girls to take up cricket and other sports, and that some of the players could eventually represent the district and beyond.

The organisers thanked the participating schools, players, coaches, volunteers and local residents for their support, and announced plans to hold more such events in the future to widen participation among girls.
