Environment, Climate and Sustainability: Science, Policy and Pathways took centre stage at Kashmir University as a three-day national seminar brought together ecologists, hydrologists, soil experts, policymakers and researchers from across India to discuss some of the most pressing environmental challenges facing the country. Addressing the valedictory session on September 17, 2026, Lieutenant Governor Shri Manoj Sinha highlighted the interconnected nature of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution, describing them as dimensions of the wider triple planetary crisis. He called for a holistic approach that breaks departmental silos and recognises the deep links between water, forests, climate and other environmental systems. The Lieutenant Governor also stressed the growing role of technology in connecting scientific knowledge with governance. He highlighted Geospatial Intelligence, including GIS, remote sensing and UAVs, and called for a shift from reactive responses to anticipatory governance through tools such as Climate Sensitivity Maps and Spatial Decision Support Systems. Emphasising the need to bridge the gap between science and policymaking, he said India does not lack climate data, scientific models or even AI-enabled tools. What is needed, he stressed, are stronger institutional mechanisms that can translate scientific findings into timely decisions for district development, water management and disaster preparedness. Calling on young researchers to think beyond disciplinary boundaries, the Lieutenant Governor said development must go hand in hand with responsibility and conservation. He urged policymakers to understand and act upon the language of science so that research can have a direct impact on communities and the environment. Looking ahead to the vision of a Developed India by 2047, Shri Manoj Sinha stressed that development must be inclusive and climate-resilient. He expressed hope that the dialogue initiated at Kashmir University would continue across laboratories, universities, districts and policymaking institutions, strengthening India’s journey towards sustainable development through science, technology and collaboration.
