Kashmir proudly known as ‘Paradise on Earth’ is also home to temperate fruits like apples, for which the state is very famous across the globe. Kashmir apples are a good source of Vitamin C, dietary fibre, flavonoids and antioxidants. The labour force employed at apple orchards begin apple picking and sorting from 9am till 5pm in the evening. Ghulam Muhammad, an apple farmer in Shopian says we do the grading of apples. The apples are graded according to size and packed. Around 100 apple cartons are packed in a day. Kashmir apples are blush-red and smooth skinned apples which are superior in terms of quality and taste. Farmer Abdul Washid Wani belonging to Shopian says, our apples go to Delhi, even Kerala and to the whole of India. Kashmir apples have got the best taste in the world. The most common areas in Kashmir which are known for its apple cultivation are Srinagar, Budgam, Pulwama, Anantnag, Baramulla and Kupwara. The apples should fetch at least Rs 1000 or more, the farmers say. And the apples grown here are sufficient to feed the whole of India, tell farmers. We should not be importing apples; we have plenty of them here.
