Kashmir , April 4, 2025: Indian cinema lost one of its towering figures today as veteran actor-filmmaker Manoj Kumar passed away at the age of 87 in Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital. Known affectionately as “Bharat Kumar” for his patriotic films, Kumar succumbed to age-related health issues, including cardiogenic shock caused by a severe heart attack, at around 3:30 AM. His death marks the end of an era for Bollywood, where his contributions as an actor, director, and screenwriter shaped narratives of national pride and social consciousness.
Born Harikrishan Giri Goswami on July 24, 1937, in Abbottabad , Kumar moved to Delhi after the Partition and later pursued a career in cinema. Inspired by Dilip Kumar’s character in the film Shabnam, he adopted the name Manoj Kumar and debuted in 1957 with Fashion. His breakthrough came with the patriotic classic Shaheed , where he portrayed freedom fighter Bhagat Singh, earning widespread acclaim. This role set the tone for his career, defined by films that celebrated Indian values and resilience.
Kumar’s directorial ventures, including Upkar , Purab Aur Paschim , Roti Kapda Aur Makaan , and Kranti , cemented his reputation as a filmmaker with a unique voice. Upkar, inspired by Lal Bahadur Shastri’s slogan “Jai Jawan Jai Kisan,” won him a National Film Award and popularised his “Bharat Kumar” persona. His films blended compelling storytelling with meaningful lyrics and iconic song picturizations, resonating with audiences across generations. Other notable works include Hariyali Aur Raasta , Woh Kaun Thi , and Neel Kamal , showcasing his versatility as an actor.
Over a career spanning four decades, Kumar’s commitment to socially relevant cinema earned him numerous accolades, including the Padma Shri in 1992 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2015, India’s highest cinematic honor. Despite stepping away from filmmaking in recent years, his influence remained strong, inspiring actors and directors to embrace themes of patriotism and cultural identity.
Kumar’s passing has prompted an outpouring of grief from the film industry and beyond. His son, Kunal Goswami, confirmed that the final rites will take place on April 5, with the mortal remains kept at Kumar’s Juhu residence for fans and colleagues to pay their respects. The loss of Manoj Kumar closes a chapter in Indian cinema, but his films will continue to ignite pride and inspire future generations.
