Shopian,April 3, 2026- In the remote and snow-bound region of Falpalang in Hirpora, Ulfat Bano is quietly transforming lives through her role as a Branch Postmaster (BPM). Managing the local post office, she ensures that essential postal services reach every household, no matter how difficult the terrain or weather conditions.
Handling all postal responsibilities, Ulfat Bano delivers letters, online shopping parcels, and important documents to residents with dedication and efficiency. From appointment letters that mark the beginning of new careers to exam results that shape students’ futures, each delivery carries emotions—and she takes pride in being the bearer of such life-changing news.
Beyond routine postal work, she has played an active role in distributing government welfare benefits. Under initiatives like the Vishwakarma scheme, she has helped distribute around 200 kits in the Falpalang area, including tailoring and carpentry kits, with a significant number benefiting young girls.
Expressing gratitude to the Government of India, Ulfat highlights how the establishment of the post office in such a remote area has greatly improved access to essential services for the local population. “It has brought convenience and connectivity to people who earlier had to travel long distances,” she notes.
Working in a challenging environment, Ulfat often braves heavy snowfall of up to six to seven feet, frequent rains, and harsh weather conditions. Despite the risks, she continues to travel on foot to ensure timely delivery of mail, even when residents are unable to step out of their homes.
Her dedication has not only earned her respect in the community but also blessings from those who receive good news through her efforts. “People feel happy, and I feel equally happy delivering those letters,” she says.
Ulfat Bano also serves as an inspiration for women in the region. Encouraging more girls to take up such roles, she emphasizes that there is no difference between men and women in this field. “We are equally capable. With honesty and dedication, women can perform this work just as efficiently,” she adds.
Through her commitment, resilience, and service, Ulfat Bano stands as a symbol of empowerment and grassroots governance, ensuring that even the most remote corners remain connected to opportunities and progress.
