The Institute of High Altitude Medicinal Plants (IHAMP), Thanthera, is promoting the cultivation and conservation of high-altitude medicinal and aromatic plants, creating new livelihood opportunities for farmers while strengthening the region’s potential for herbal tourism. Over the past five to six years, around 300 farmers from the erstwhile Doda district have been associated with the initiative. The programme encourages farmers to cultivate medicinal and aromatic plants suited to high-altitude conditions, helping diversify agricultural activities and explore new sources of income. IHAMP has also developed a herbal garden, demonstration garden, high-altitude nursery and seed germplasm centre. Over the past two to three years, the institute has produced approximately 20,000–30,000 plants, supporting the conservation and cultivation of valuable Himalayan plant species. The initiative is also contributing to the promotion of herbal tourism in Bhaderwah. Visitors from different parts of the country are showing interest in medicinal plants, cultivation practices and the region’s natural resources. Lavender cultivation, associated with the Purple Revolution, has further enhanced the area’s tourism appeal, attracting visitors to its colourful fields and agricultural landscapes. By combining scientific cultivation techniques, plant conservation and tourism promotion, IHAMP is working to strengthen farmers’ livelihoods while preserving the Himalayan region’s rich biodiversity. The initiative highlights Bhaderwah’s potential to emerge as an important destination for medicinal plant research, sustainable agriculture and nature-based tourism, while creating fresh opportunities for local communities.
