Srinagar, April 10, 2025 – Vehicular movement on the Bandipora–Gurez road has been suspended as heavy snowfall blanketed the region, particularly at Razdan Top, prompting authorities to take precautionary measures. The closure, announced earlier today, is expected to remain in effect until further notice as snow accumulation continues to render the route impassable.
The Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Gurez confirmed that the decision was made due to continuous snowfall at Razdan Top, a high-altitude pass along the 85-kilometer stretch connecting Bandipora and Gurez Valley in North Kashmir. “The road will remain closed until weather conditions improve and it is deemed safe for travel,” the SDM stated. Authorities have urged residents and travellers to avoid the route and stay updated on official announcements.
The Bandipora–Gurez road, a vital lifeline for the remote Gurez Valley, often faces closures during winter and early spring due to heavy snow and adverse weather conditions. This year, however, the suspension comes after a relatively shorter closure period earlier in the season, with the road having reopened for two-way traffic just weeks ago on March 30 following a 28-day shutdown.
Local reports indicate that the higher reaches of Gurez, including Razdan Top, Dawar Gurez, and Tulail, have experienced significant snowfall since early this morning, with accumulations making travel hazardous. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for maintaining the route, has been unable to commence immediate snow clearance operations due to the ongoing storm.
The closure disrupts connectivity for Gurez residents, who rely on the road for essential supplies and access to Bandipora and beyond. “We understand the inconvenience, but safety is our top priority,” an official said, advising travelers to plan accordingly.
The India Meteorological Department has forecast continued wet weather in parts of Jammu and Kashmir, raising concerns about further disruptions. Residents and officials alike are bracing for potential challenges as the region navigates the late-season snowfall.
For now, the Bandipora–Gurez road remains shut, with authorities monitoring conditions closely. Updates will be provided as snow clearance efforts progress and visibility improves.
