Kashmir Ahead

Sports Power Youth, Promote Drug-Free Kashmir

Sports is emerging as a powerful platform for engaging young people, nurturing talent and encouraging them to stay away from drugs. An ongoing month-long sporting event in Kashmir is providing children and youth with opportunities to participate in running, shot put, high jump, long jump and other disciplines. Participants and coaches highlighted the immense sporting talent present across villages, districts and communities of Kashmir. Such events give young athletes a platform to showcase their abilities and create opportunities to progress towards inter-district, national and international competitions. Coaches said the main objective is to keep youth actively engaged in sports and promote both physical and mental fitness. They emphasised that sports not only develop athletic skills but also teach discipline, determination and teamwork. Students also spoke about the importance of balancing education with sports. They said encouragement from teachers motivates them to perform well in academics while also pursuing sporting activities. The event is also being used to spread awareness about the dangers of drug abuse. Participants urged young people to stay away from drugs and choose healthy, productive activities instead. With continued efforts to engage youth throughout the year in both urban and rural areas, sports can provide a constructive platform for young people to develop confidence, discipline and ambition while pursuing their dreams.
