Srinagar, March 9,2026- The adoption of rooftop solar systems is steadily gaining momentum across Jammu and Kashmir as households increasingly turn to renewable energy to reduce electricity costs and promote environmental sustainability. The growing interest in household solar power reflects rising awareness about clean energy solutions and government initiatives aimed at expanding solar energy usage in the region.
Officials from the Jammu and Kashmir Energy Development Agency said that several households in both urban and rural areas have begun installing rooftop solar panels under various government-supported schemes. These initiatives aim to encourage residents to generate their own electricity while contributing to the region’s renewable energy capacity.
According to energy department officials, the adoption of rooftop solar systems has accelerated due to financial incentives, subsidies, and awareness campaigns highlighting the long-term benefits of solar power. Homeowners are increasingly recognising that solar installations can significantly reduce monthly electricity bills while ensuring a more reliable power supply.
Experts note that Jammu and Kashmir’s geographical location offers significant potential for solar energy generation, particularly during long sunny periods in many parts of the region. By installing solar photovoltaic panels, households can produce clean electricity and reduce dependence on conventional power sources.
Authorities are also promoting solar energy through national programs such as the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, which aims to encourage rooftop solar installations across India. Under the scheme, eligible households can receive subsidies to help cover installation costs, making solar energy more accessible and affordable.
Residents who have already installed solar panels report noticeable reductions in electricity expenses and greater energy independence. Many households are also contributing excess electricity back to the grid through net metering, further enhancing the economic benefits of solar adoption.
Energy experts believe that expanding rooftop solar installations can play a crucial role in improving power availability in remote areas of Jammu and Kashmir while reducing carbon emissions. Increased adoption is also expected to support India’s broader renewable energy targets.
Officials said the government plans to intensify outreach programs to educate citizens about the advantages of solar power and the procedures for availing subsidies. With rising awareness and supportive policies, the trend of household solar adoption in Jammu and Kashmir is expected to grow steadily in the coming years.
