Pulwama, September 13, 2025 – In a proactive effort to safeguard public health amid recent flood-like conditions triggered by incessant rains, the District Pulwama administration, in coordination with the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), is actively conducting a comprehensive campaign for the **prevention of water borne diseases**. The initiative, which kicked off earlier this month following directives from the Jammu and Kashmir government, focuses on **on-spot water quality analysis** at households (HHs), water sources, Anganwadi Centres (AWCs), and schools to ensure **safe water** availability across the district. The campaign, now in its second week, emphasizes rigorous **water testing** and hands-on demonstrations to promote **safe consumption of water**. Teams from the health department, Jal Shakti, and JJM are visiting vulnerable areas, including flood-affected zones, to perform immediate assessments using portable testing kits. This includes checking for contaminants that could lead to outbreaks of diseases such as cholera, dysentery, and typhoid. “Our goal is to prevent any health emergencies by ensuring every drop of water is safe,” said a senior official from the District Project Management Unit (DPMU) JJM Pulwama. Key activities underway today include awareness sessions in schools and AWCs, where children and caregivers are being educated on boiling water, using filters, and recognizing signs of contamination. Door-to-door campaigns led by ASHA workers are also mobilizing communities for hygiene practices and sanitation drives around traditional water sources. The 15-day statewide drive, aligned with General Administration Department guidelines, has seen water tankers deployed in affected areas to bridge any supply gaps. Deputy Commissioner Pulwama, Dr. Basharat Qayoom, who chaired the inaugural meeting on September 4, stressed the importance of inter-departmental collaboration. “We are intensifying **water quality testing** and public awareness to mitigate risks from **water borne diseases**. Community participation is crucial,” he remarked during the review session attended by the Chief Medical Officer, Chief Education Officer, and other stakeholders. Early reports indicate positive community response, with several schools and AWCs in Pulwama town and surrounding villages participating actively. The health department has issued alerts on potential outbreaks and is monitoring water supply assets closely. This campaign builds on similar efforts in neighboring districts like Kishtwar and Shopian, underscoring a regional push for **safe water** security. Residents are urged to report any water quality concerns via local helplines and to adopt safe consumption habits. As the initiative continues, Pulwama aims to emerge resilient against environmental health threats.
