Progressive Farmer Fayaz Ahmad Sheikh Introduces Blueberry Cultivation in Jammu and Kashmir

Progressive farmer Fayaz Ahmad Sheikh from Kharchak, Watergam, Baramulla, is bringing innovation to agriculture in Jammu and Kashmir by introducing blueberry cultivation, offering a promising alternative to traditional apple farming. Observing that most farmers in Kashmir primarily depend on apple orchards, Sheikh decided to explore a different crop with growing market demand. After researching blueberry cultivation online, he imported a few plants and successfully grew them in the region. His farm is being presented as the first blueberry farm in Kashmir. Sheikh believes that diversifying traditional orchards can help farmers explore new income opportunities and reduce their dependence on a single crop. He encourages orchard owners to dedicate five to ten per cent of their land to alternative fruit cultivation, depending on suitability and resources. Blueberries are valued for their nutritional properties, particularly their antioxidant content, and are gaining attention in the market. India relies significantly on imported blueberries, creating opportunities for domestic cultivation, although commercial success depends on local growing conditions, production costs and market access. Visitors to Sheikh’s farm have expressed appreciation for his initiative, highlighting how young entrepreneurs can build self-employment opportunities while generating livelihoods for others. His journey reflects the importance of agricultural innovation, crop diversification and youth entrepreneurship in strengthening the rural economy. By introducing blueberry cultivation in Baramulla, Fayaz Ahmad Sheikh is encouraging farmers across Jammu and Kashmir to explore new possibilities and work towards sustainable agricultural growth.
