Srinagar, September 2, 2025 – Renowned film actor Ms. Priti Sapru called on Lieutenant Governor (LG) Shri Manoj Sinha at the Raj Bhavan here today, accompanied by a distinguished delegation comprising S. Paramjit Singh Chandhok, Chief Advisor of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee, fellow film actor Shri Tej Sapru, and Shri Sanjeev Saraf. The meeting focused on briefing the LG about their initiative to organise a grand commemorative event in Jammu and Kashmir to mark the 350th Martyrdom Day of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, the ninth Sikh Guru revered for his supreme sacrifice in upholding religious freedom. The delegation, representing key figures from the entertainment industry and the Sikh community, highlighted the significance of the event in promoting interfaith harmony and cultural exchange in the Union Territory. Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji’s martyrdom in 1675, during which he laid down his life to protect the rights of Kashmiri Pandits and others facing religious persecution under Mughal rule, holds profound historical relevance for J&K. The proposed commemoration aims to honor his legacy through a series of activities, including seminars, cultural programs, and community gatherings, expected to be held across Srinagar, Jammu, and other districts in November 2025, aligning with the global observance of the 350th anniversary.LG Manoj Sinha, known for his proactive engagement with cultural and religious initiatives, warmly received the delegation and assured them of the administration’s full support.
“The martyrdom of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji is a timeless symbol of courage and secularism. Organizing such an event in J&K will not only pay tribute to his ideals but also strengthen our commitment to unity and diversity,” the LG remarked, emphasizing the UT’s rich multicultural fabric. He directed relevant departments, including the Department of Culture and Tourism, to coordinate with the organizers for seamless execution, including venue arrangements, security, and outreach to the Sikh community in the region.Ms. Priti Sapru, a veteran Bollywood actress celebrated for her roles in films like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayengeand Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, expressed gratitude for the LG’s encouragement. Accompanied by her brother Tej Sapru, another accomplished actor known for appearances in Kurbaan and A Wednesday, the siblings bring a personal touch to the initiative, drawing from their family’s deep roots in Jammu. S. Paramjit Singh Chandhok, a prominent community leader, outlined the event’s blueprint, which includes youth participation, educational workshops on Sikh history, and langar (community kitchen) services to foster inclusivity. Shri Sanjeev Saraf, a noted philanthropist, complemented the discussion by sharing insights on logistical support and funding.
This meeting aligns with ongoing efforts by the J&K administration to celebrate significant religious milestones, following recent commemorations like the 550th Prakash Purab of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. The Sikh community in J&K, though a minority, has contributed immensely to the region’s social and cultural life, with historic gurdwaras in areas like Mohalla Mohra in Srinagar serving as centers of devotion. The event is anticipated to draw participants from across India and possibly international Sikh organizations, boosting tourism and cultural diplomacy in the Kashmir Valley. As preparations gain momentum, the delegation invited the LG to inaugurate the event, to which he positively responded. For more details on the commemoration or to participate, interested individuals can contact the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee or the J&K Cultural Affairs Department. This initiative not only honors a pivotal figure in Sikhism but also reinforces J&K’s role as a cradle of religious tolerance.
