Poonch , December 13,2025:Farmers in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district are witnessing a significant rise in income as vegetable farming gains momentum, offering sustainable livelihood opportunities and reducing dependence on traditional crops.
With favourable climatic conditions and increasing access to modern farming techniques, local farmers have shifted towards cultivating vegetables such as tomatoes, peas, cauliflower, cabbage, and capsicum. The move has resulted in higher yields and quicker returns compared to conventional cereal farming.
Agriculture officials said that government initiatives, including training programmes, seed distribution, and awareness campaigns, have played a key role in encouraging farmers to adopt vegetable cultivation. Improved market access and growing demand in nearby towns have further strengthened farm incomes.
Farmers expressed satisfaction with the transition, noting that vegetable farming has helped them achieve financial stability and better support their families. “Vegetable cultivation has changed our lives by providing steady income throughout the season,” said a local farmer.
Experts believe that the expansion of vegetable farming in Poonch is contributing to rural economic growth and employment generation. It also promotes efficient land use and encourages youth participation in agriculture.
As more farmers embrace diversified agriculture, vegetable farming is emerging as a vital component of Poonch’s agricultural economy, bringing optimism and prosperity to the farming community.
